The Berliner Philharmoniker has been a presence on records since 1913. Wildly controversial at first, today universally regarded as an emblem of the city of Berlin: Hans Scharoun’s Philharmonie. In 1956 the architect’s design won the competition for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra’s new concert hall, but his modern, visionary conception also unleashed a great hubbub. The building went up (1960-63) in the face of great resistance. In the meantime, this concert hall with its unique architecture and acoustics has become a model for many others all over the world. The Philharmonie can be visited even when no concert is taking place within its walls.

The Staatsoper Unter den Linden was opened on December 7, 1742 with a performance of Carl Heinrich Graun´s “Cleopatra e Cesare” on December 7, 1742. Therefore it is the oldest of four opera houses in Berlin. Today it continues its unique program of concerts and operas, which range from Baroque operas with historically accurate stage management, including the central works of classical, Romantic and modern opera literature, and extend to the realization of premieres of contemporary composers. The performances are of the very highest musical quality, something guaranteed by the presence of Daniel Barenboim as the general music director, as well as by renowned guest conductors, a house ensemble of first-rate singers, augmented by internationally known personalities of the singing world, and by the Berlin Staatskapelle.

Please note: For the period of the urgently necessary renovation of the entire Staatsoper Unter den Linden building complex the Schiller Theater in Berlin- Charlottenburg will serve as an alternative venue from October 2010 till summer 2013!

Did you know that there is a building in Berlin that fits the Brandenburg Gate? Since September 2008 you find such a construction between East Central Station (Ostbahnhof) and Warschauer Straße: the O₂ World. It’s one of the most modern multi- functional arenas worldwide, in which sports, entertainment and concert highlights take place for up to 17,000 people. ALBA Berlin for example is the most successful German basketball club within the last 10 years. During the 2008/09 season ALBA Berlin participated as the only German team in the Euroleague, the Champions League in basketball. Likewise the champion of the German ice hockey league “Eisbären Berlin” decided early to play its home games in the O₂ World and intends to delight the audience with fast and aggressive games.
