Checkpoint Charlie Museum: „Haus am Checkpoint Charlie“ Friedrichstraße 43 10969 Berlin telephone: +49 30 253725-0 http://www.mauer-museum.com In 1961 US American and Russian tanks were stressfully confronting each other at the border crossing later known as „Checkpoint Charlie“. During the Cold War „Checkpoint Charlie“ became famous - not only because of the borderline itself. The crossing of spies in their Mercedes Benz, the desperate attempts of East German citizens to flee from the communist system and the constant presence of armed forces caused also a symbolic connotation. In 1989 the situation changed. Since the descend of the Berlin Wall - and the iron curtain - „Checkpoint Charlie“ has become a tourist spot with a famous museum. The whole area has changed into a lively business district. |
